Events

Happy 4th of July Weekend! July 4 is Independence Day in the United States, and for many that means outdoor picnics and fireworks displays.

Not into barbecue and pyrotechnics? Here are a couple of great ways to enjoy the holiday weekend online:

Staying Creative in Chaotic Times, a free online event from the National Library Board of Singapore. Austin Kleon, author of a bestselling trilogy about creativity in the digital age, will discuss his work and share his strategies for finding inspiration in everyday life and building creative resilience for the long haul. Friday, July 2, 11 PM CDT.

Cocktails and Conversation with Toneal Jackson, a free virtual event brought to you by Let's Just Write! An Uncommon Writers Conference and the Chicago Writers Association. Toneal runs APS Publishing, which produces inspirational, self-help; nonfiction, poetry and children's titles. She uses her experience and expertise as an author and life coach to help others accomplish their literary goals. Sunday, July 4, 4 PM CDT.

Finally, if you are into fireworks but don't feel like hauling your lawn chair to the park, check out the Capitol Fourth 2021 Fireworks Show from Washington, D.C., which will include performances by Renée Fleming, Jimmy Buffett, Gladys Knight, Alan Jackson, Pentatonix and more. Free on PBS' Facebook page, YouTube channel and website. Sunday, July 4, 8 PM ET.
